Launch Party

I'm really excited to be able to share my submission for Nobrow 6 which launched a few weeks ago. Ol' Pale Horse makes his print debut in this issue where Nobrow asked over 60 artists to contribute work to the theme of Doubles or Doppelgangers. This issue is seriously incredible and I highly recommend picking it up. (along with everything else these guys are putting out!)

The first image is of the original artwork I sent them and I how I envisioned the color. The second photo is what it looks like in the actual issue. I'm really liking the orange they chose. It really pops and doesn't feel as depressing as the blueish grey I chose. And the last two images are from the launch party they threw and were pulled off the blog 8 and 2. My piece for the "Night Out at the Movies" Art show in Ottawa tonight. It's an 8x10 digital print on Artist's Archival Paper. It's also in an old wooden frame I wish I had of photographed before I shipped it out. I loved the Fantastic Mr. Fox and I especially love when they're in their Bandit Hats so I knew exactly what I wanted to do when Kyle gave me the details for the show.

Sketchbook Project 2011

This year I took part in the Sketchbook Project and was really glad I did. I spent about 2 weeks non stop filling it up around xmas time and loved every minute of it. I was notified recently that they digitized it so now I can share with you all. It's being housed with thousands of others at the Brooklyn Art Library after a tour around the US. The theme I was given was "A Face in the Crowd" so I first went through cover to cover feeling the pages with crowds then went over it again with highlighter then I went back a third time putting a face on each page. Growing up with the name Scott it was inevitably turned to "Snot" or "Snotty" since a lot people called me Scotty. There were other variations like "Scott the Snot" or "Lil Snotty" too. I probably did have some snots drippin though. It's cold on the East Coast.

Since today is "Record Store Day" I thought I'd share my favorite record, in terms of art direction, that I own. I found this gem buried at the bottom of a mountain of unorganized records at the Dartmouth Flea Market last Spring. It comes with four 45's in printed brown paper sleeves all sitting inside a great little half inch box. I love everything about this package. From the characters to the design and typography to the artist's name and track titles ("I wonder who's kissing her now") and all the little details, like the hula dancer on the drum kit and the cigarette holder in the bass player's mouth. Even though I didn't get this one at a record store it always reminds me how much I enjoy records and going record hunting.

The Coast - Holiday Fiction Issuse

Here's an Illustration I did for The Coast this week. All they told me was that it was for the Holiday Fiction Issue. I really didn't understand what that meant or what the drawing was going to be used for, so I played it safe and just drew a guy reading a book and thinking it would make a great gift.

You can easily notice Ol' Pale Horse looks slightly different in each comic along with changes in style. It's probably because I just rough out each comic and ink and color it from memory without really worrying about staying on model too much. I'm just kinda playing around with him at the moment and letting him evolve on his own without trying to force it too much. I also added a cat recently to keep him company. Who knows where this will go either. I really don't put much thought into these. I just start doodling and things happen on there own from panel to panel. Also if your a fan of The Supervillains site and like drawing comics (doesn't matter what your skill level is) there is a post about how you can submit your comics for the Saturday and Sunday slots. Just click on the button that says "Send in your Comics" on the upper right side of the page when you get over there.

Here's a tiled background I made for my new twitter page. All I did was create the image below and set it to tile when I uploaded it onto Twitter. It took a bit of playing around to get the text to match up, but I managed to figure it out. I'd really like to try something a little more complicated next time because I really love final effect. First Edition - Volume 2 - Who are the People in your Neighborhood?

I'm really excited to have a print in the First Edition - Volume 2 of David Huyck's Cloudy Collection. The theme was "Who are the people in your Neighborhood?'. At the time I was living in Lunenburg,NS which is world famous for ship building and is the home port of the Bluenose. It was a pretty easy and obvious choice to go with an old ship builder. Here's some pictures of the actual prints which are letterpress prints made on 4″x6″ white bamboo paper using vegetable-based inks on a Vandercook press. Printed with all wind-power by Boxcar Press in Syracuse, NY, the edition is limited to 100 sets of prints.

I'm using grey and black to keep it photocopier friendly and once I get 20 characters done it will be time to print and assemble some books!

Back in the spring I put together this pitch for Nickelodeon's International Open Mics ...
"Open Mics give creators the chance to “show not tell” their idea for a breakout character. Creators are invited to produce and deliver a fully funded, 3min non-airing pilot featuring a break out, visually diverse and funny new character."...
I thought this would be the perfect time to pitch Short-Arms Long-Legs, who I thought up a few years ago, but sadly he was turned down. They just didn't think he was the kinda kid other kids would want to be like. I can understand where they were coming from, but for some reason I've always been drawn to characters like this. Characters with obvious flaws and short comings that they manage to work around in clever ways.

Grey Man Can Jump

The Grey Geese are legendary on ball courts across the land and famous for their signature half court dunks. The Geese have been recorded to have only lost one game ever. Back in 1986 they played an intense match up against the Harlem Globetrotters that last two weeks. At that time the Globetrotters had record low attendances and were on the verge of folding. It is common knowledge that the Geese let them win to help improve the Globetrotters dwindling popularity. Word spread fast of the big win and Harlem's beloved team was back on top and lived to play another day.

Recently I got a dog and named her Olive Oyl like Popeye's girl. We're living by the ocean in a town known for sailing so it seemed like a good fit. She's an Australian Cattle Dog also know as a Blue Heeler. They pretty much look like a dingo or a coyote. They're working dogs used for herding, but since we don't have any cattle she keeps her skills sharp by herding the cat. If you want a dog and are wondering if you should make the plunge, I would now say just go out and do it. A lot of work at times, but definitely worth it.

This is a character I've been doodling a lot recently. I've been toying around with the idea of a little book for him. He's an orphan people call Young Fella who lives in a town of drunken sailors. He spends his days fishing empty bottles out of the harbour in his modified shopping cart.

Tyson 85 Book

This is one of those projects I've picked up and put down too many times this year and finally finished this week. It's a handmade book of drawings about the people Mike Tyson fought in 1985 (His first year as a professional boxer). His 19th birthday and the death of his adopted father and trainer are also documented in there. I couldn't find photos of anyone he fought in 85 so I looked all the fights up on youtube and drew from them. They're really low quality hand held videos, but definitely worth checking out. Mike was an unstoppable force, knocking people out left, right and center on his way to the top that year.
I illustrated, designed, printed and assembled this thing myself so it's a limited edition of about 40 books for now. Once I figure out the best way to sell these and get them out there I'll let you know where you can pick one up. Until then you can PREVIEW IT HERE.

This is a kid named George from a movie I recently watched called "George Washington" by David Gordon Green. Really great characters and story. That hat is actually a helmet to protect his soft skull and is made from his dead dog. Check out this trailer it's really good.

The Grey Geese never stay in a spot more than once in the same year. If a spot is good then an apple tree is plant on that spot. After a year the Geese will return to this spot and fresh apples will be consumed by the baker's dozen.
